Glossary
We at Como Oil & Propane (and the heating industry by and large) use a few terms you might now be familiar with. Here are a few common terms and their meanings.
AFUE
Abbreviation for "Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency," it is an energy-efficiency ratio comparing the useful energy produced by an appliance in a year with the amount of energy it consumes. Thus, the higher the AFUE rating, the better the efficiency.
Boiler
A gas, oil, propane, or solid-fuel-burning appliance that produces hot water or steam which is circulated through pipes to heat-radiating devices in a room.
BillPay
An automatic payment system that conveniently pays Como Budget Plan payments directly from the customer's bank account. Click here for more information.
BTU
Abbreviation for "British Thermal Unit," it is a traditional measurement for the amount of heat needed to raise one pound of water 1° F from a starting point of 39.2°F. BTUH stand for British Thermal Unit Per Hour to measure BTU input or output over time. MBH stands for 1,000 BTUH.
Carbon Monoxide
A colorless, oderless gas that affects the central nervous system and can cause death through asphyxiation. Carbon Monoxide can be produced by improperly vented or poorly adjusted propane appliances.
Convected Heat
Warmth transmitted to a colder body through physical contact with a substance, such as air.
Degree Days
The difference in temperature between 65°F and the average temperature over the previous 24-hour period. For example, if the average temperature over the previous 24-hour period was 30°F, 35 degree-days have elapsed.
Fuel Oil
#1 or #2 grade diesel fuel that is burned to produce heat.
Hydronic
Refers to temperature control systems that circulate heated or cooled water to maintain comfort.

Propane
A heavy gas stored under pressure and burned to produce heat.
Radiant Heat
Warmth transmitted to a colder body by the direct contact of infrared rays. See "convected heat."
Will Call
For Como customers not on Keep Fill, a delivery option where the customer calls to schedule a fuel delivery.
Zoning
A method of regulating temperatures by using a dedicated thermostat and system of valves and hydronic heating devices for each area of a home.
