Como Oil and Propane offers safety tips to help you enjoy your barbecue

Duluth, MN – Safely operated, propane grills deliver unsurpassed barbecue delights for everything from family dinners to grad parties and other celebrations. Here are the top tips from Como Oil and Propane to keep you safe when you put on the chef’s apron and fire up the grill.

Correct Grill Use
1.    When lighting a grill, keep the top open.
2.    Before connecting the cylinder to a propane gas grill burner for the first time,
use a leak-detection solution (a 50/50 mixture of water and liquid soap)
       to check connections for tightness.
3.    Do not use matches or lighters to check for leaks.
4.    Do not allow children to tamper with the cylinder or grill.
5.    Do not smoke while handling a propane cylinder.
6.    When a grill is not in use, cover disconnected hose-end fittings with
plastic bags or protective caps to keep clean.
7.    Always follow grill manufacturer’s instructions and keep written
       materials accessible.
8.    Never pour an accelerant such as lighter fluid or gasoline on the grill.
9.    When finished grilling, turn off the burner controls and close the cylinder valve.

Proper Propane Cylinder Handling
1.    When the cylinder is refilled, have the supplier check for dents, damage,
       rust, or leaks.
2.    After filling or exchanging a cylinder, take it home immediately. Keep the
vehicle ventilated and the cylinder valve closed and capped.
3.    Always use or store cylinders outdoors in an upright (vertical) position.
4.    Do not use, store, or transport cylinders near high temperatures
(this includes storing spare cylinders near the grill).

“I just bought a new gas grill and it’s making me look like a chef extraordinaire,” says John Heino, president & CEO of Como Oil and Propane. “When I bought it, I took the opportunity to get a complete safety briefing from our service professionals. If you’re buying a propane grill or if you have one and it’s been awhile since you reviewed the safety information, please take a moment to make sure you operate your grill safely.”

Como Oil & Propane teams up with Northwoods Propane, Inc. to serve customers in Hibbing and surrounding areas of the Iron Range

Emphasis remains on friendly, local service

We are very pleased and excited to announce that Northwoods Propane has joined forces with Como Oil & Propane to serve customers in Hibbing and surrounding areas. Effective January 2, Northwoods Propane began operating as the Hibbing Division of Como Oil & Propane.

Northwoods Propane Co-owners Dave Brownell and Shelly Marshall and all Northwoods employees will continue as Como Hibbing Division staff to provide the same great service to area customers. Dave Brownell will manage the division.

"The first thing I want to stress is that we're not going anywhere," says Dave. "Our entire Northwoods team will continue offering the same attentive local service under the Como banner. Comohas a proven approach that combines the customer-friendly advantages of a locally managed office with the buying power of nine division offices in northeastern Minnesota and northwesternWisconsin."

Duluth-based Como Oil & Propane has served regional heating customers for more than 60 years and recently built a new office and bulk plant west of Tower on Highway 169.

"The Iron Range has a central role in our plans," says John Heino, president of Como. "Our business has grown nicely in the Tower area and with the mining industry, so we're excited to have Dave and Shelly and their super team put on Como jerseys. Joining forces will benefit customers of both companies."

Como is uniquely positioned as a regional company large enough to gain efficiencies and negotiate better prices on propane, tanks and trucks. Unlike huge national companies that buy local fuel suppliers only to lay off key people and cut back on service, Como believes in keeping friendly, knowledgeable local management and staff to give customers the service they expect and deserve.

Como Oil and Propane expands presence in West Duluth
Duluth division and corporate administration share new facility at 4330 West First Street

To increase operating efficiency, Como Oil & Propane has relocated all Duluth staff and operations into a new facility at 4330 West First Street, Suite A, in West Duluth. All Duluth phone numbers will remain the same.

“With the volatility in wholesale prices we pay for propane and oil, it’s more important than ever that Como operates as efficiently as possible and manages the costs we can control,” says John Heino, President of Como Oil & Propane. “Moving all of our Duluth personnel into one location provides direct cost savings, as well as efficiency gains. These gains allow us to serve our customers better at a lower cost.”

To make the move, Como worked with A&L Properties and signed a ten-year lease on the new building. A&L is the same company from which Como leased its two previous Duluth offices. “We appreciate our relationship with A&L,” Heino says. “Their flexibility and expertise helped us find a commercial real estate solution that will benefit our customers and coworkers for years to come.” Como Oil & Propane is a full-service heating fuel supplier, providing propane, oil and related services to Northland customers through eight local offices in Duluth, Barnum, Two Harbors, Grand Marais, Tower, Ashland, Cable and Minong.
